Mark 10:1-12 – Marriage, Divorce and Adultery
The art of mishearing
Principle 1: Marriage is intended by God to be a life-long and exclusive relationship between a man and a woman.
Principle 2: ‘Outside the garden’ all marriages are marred by human sinfulness and weakness.
Principle 3: Given God’s intention and instruction and our fallenness and weakness we must strive and fight for healthy marriages.
Principle 4: The reality of relationships in a ruined world.
Principle 5: In our fallen world; divorce exists, that is the ending of a marriage before death.
Principle 6: The fallenness of humanity results in broken relationships and broken relationships lead to divorce but divorce is never to be viewed in a positive way.
Question one: Can a marriage bond actually be broken?
Question two: Does the Bible give any indication that a marriage can be dissolved in God’s eyes?
Question three: Are there any other circumstances that would allow for a legitimate divorce followed by a non-adulterous second marriage?
Question four: What is Jesus seeking to achieve in this dialogue with the religious leaders?
Question five: Where does that leave those who committed adultery or entered into an adulterous’ marriage?
