Mark 10 v 32-52 “Gospel Clarity” Handout

Intro: “Before you can walk in the truth cleanly, you need to know the truth clearly.”

                          1) Passive Christianity is NOT true discipleship

Vital truths:

  • Identity of Jesus:

  • Work of Jesus:

  • Mercy of Jesus:

  • Efficacy of Jesus:

What makes a person a Christian?

                               2) Discipleship means FOLLOWING Jesus

V32: “They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid.”

Jesus’ identity, work, mercy and power are supposed to make people into followers.

V52 “Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.”

Knowing things about Jesus, is not the same thing as these things causing us to follow Jesus along the road.

                             3) Discipleship means DYING to self

“What do you want me to do for you?”

  • Following Jesus means there is a cup to be drunk:

  • Following Jesus means there is a baptism to be endured:

Die to seeking our own good in this life.

  • Following Jesus means there is a life to be spent:

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

“What do you want me to do for you?”

Come and follow Jesus on the road of dying to self, which is the road filled with God’s mercy, the road that leads to glory.

  • Can we play any part at all in winning salvation for ourselves?
  • According to this passage, why can’t “Passive Christians” exist?
  • Can you see areas of your life where you are passive?
  • Where can you see evidence of you drinking the cup of suffering?
  • What would a church full of people “dying to self” look like?
  • How can you spend your life in service to God and his people?
