Luke 6 v 27-36 “The loving Kingdom”
Intro: Jesus is the whole show
1) Love like Jesus (v27-28)
What is the command? “Love your enemies”
- Do good … to those who hate you
- Bless ... those who curse you
- Pray … for those who ill-treat you
A love that is not rooted in emotion but instead in obedience and trust.
I can’t do this? Fix your eyes on the cross and your heart on the one who stayed there till it was finished.
2) Give like Jesus (v29-31)
What is the scope of this command? “Do to others as you would have them do to you”
- Slaps
- Shirts
- Wallets
- SELF
I can’t do this? Fix your eyes on the cross and your heart on the one who stayed there till it was finished.
3) Live like Jesus (v32-36)
What is the mode of this command? “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”
- No credit in loving the lovable
- No credit in lending to the reliable
- Great reward in not expecting anything back!
The “good people” of this world just cannot accept the good news of the gospel.
I can’t do this? Fix your eyes on the cross and your heart on the one who stayed there till it was finished.
Questions
- Why was this teaching so challenging for the Pharisees and teachers of the law? (Why do “good people” reject the good news of Jesus?)
- Why is “Self” such a barrier to obeying this command to love? How does Jesus ask us to use “Self” in following him?
- Would people say you are merciful? Are we as church families noticeably merciful?
- Why is the reward that Christ offers better than the credit we could gain for ourselves?
- How does this teaching urgently lead us to the cross of Jesus Christ?
