1 Tim 6 v 1-2: “The bar for relational unity in the household of God”
Intro: Supernatural unity in the household of God
1) A shocking command for the good of the world around (v1)
“All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered.”
Why does Paul think this way?
- Purpose
- Priority
There is something more important than a Christian’s comfort, dignity and even quality of life: “The glory of God and the proclamation of his gospel.”
How bothered are you by 1 Tim 6v1? What is your greatest priority?
2) A love-filled command for the good of the household of God (v2)
“Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers. Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare of their slaves.”
Direction of movement in 1 Timothy;
- Elders must manage their own family well if they are to manage the household of God
- Likewise, what goes on between a slave and master in the church gathering should correlate with what goes on at home.
Being one in Christ Jesus shouldn’t make us casual in the way we relate to one another but should elevate the respect and care we have for one another;
- Masters who are loved brothers
- Slaves who are brothers worthy of devotion
Application:
A high bar: there is no aspect of life or church life where there is not an application. Anywhere there are people and relationships, this applies.
A problem: Satan and our sinful flesh hate submission.
A challenge: Jesus Christ’s path is the path of discipleship.
An encouragement: Jesus, the slave of all, lives in you and I. We are filled with his Spirit. So let us live for his glory!
